I've had a brown out, where the altimeter resets & was beeping in stand by 
mode.
The data was there & downloaded on the first try.
It's as if it never recorded in the first place.
It is a little ironic, since I just sent out an ARTS one to be repaired.
Has anyone had problems with flight data not being stored?

Jeff, 
My ARTS I acted funny at the MARS launch in August. 
New battery, verified continuity on both FORE and AFT e-matches and everything sounded fine one out on the PAD armed.
?
Once retrieved, the ARTS I was beeping as if it was ready for flight but as you stated the data was there and downloaded with ease. 
?
The flight?went to 5150' on?a K695skidmark loaded in the?LOC Magnum, it seems that I almost broke mach.
?
This ALT did take a hard landing 2 flights ago and it has been a little funny. Just?have not found time?to mail it in for diagnostics/repair.

I flew my ARTS 2 Sunday ( as seen on TRA list) it worked for deployment, but now that I try to download, it just sits there. 

Is there any way to confirm that the data is even there?

This was the first flight of this unit.

I was able to connect to the ARTS & change the flight profile both download & upload it.

Make sure that the toggle switch  is all the way in position  for the 
data bank.  I have had this happen once before,  and  once I had the 
switch all the way in position I was able to download.

Jeff,

I received the ARTS1 you sent in for repair. The corner of the barometric
sensor is chewed up like was hit with a turning drill bit. I think the
sensor is ok, but the circuit board also got bitten into. A trace for torn
off so I'll need to bypass it with a wire. It won't look pretty, but it'll
work. Also, someone replaced the terminal blocks and did not install them
correctly. Do you want me to replace them as well?

As for your other ARTS, I am a little confused. You say that the data
"downloaded on the first try", and then you say that the data is not there?
When you download data, it downloads the contents of the memory bank
selected by switch #2. please check that the switch is set to to same memory
bank you used during the flight. Can you please send me the .odf file?

Or, you can send the unit to me to take a look at.

Chris,

 

Sometimes a hard landing will break solder joints and make an altimeter "a
little funny". The hard part with this type of damage is that it doesn't
always present itself on the test bench. Sort of like that funny rattle a
car keeps making, but then stops when you bring it in to a mechanic.

shock of the main fired. The step in the baro data after that point is
probably data recorded on a previous flight.

 

That explains the beeping you heard, and is consistent with the data.

 

The unit is probably OK.

Oh I agree, My van recently has more miles up than forward and reverse in
the past month. 

I can not complain, I got this one used and it was a champ until that fall
under drouge only and not to meantion this was the one I changed the
terminals on. 

 

It has not been a priority since I have another Arts I and (2) Arts II. 

 

Once things settle down, I'll probally mail it for evaluation sooner or
later or not since I need a reliable altimeter for my WOKET and apogee is
all thats needed.

Jeff,

One of two things happens when you download empty data: either DA hangs
(this is not often) or you just get a file filled with empty data. I do not
know why some systems hang. I have seen cases where you install the exact
same version of DA on two different computers, download the same empty data
from the same ARTS, and one hangs, the other doesn't.

With the number of ARTS in the field, I've seen every kind of problem at one
time or another. No systemic problems with the memory, though. There are
five components in the memory subsystem and if one of them is bad then it
may be preventing the processor from reading the memory chip. I have seen
rough handling cause a resistor to be torn from the board, and the memory
stopped working. In that case I'll replace the part.

If you would like to send this unit in to be evaluated, please do so. I'd be
happy to give it a going over.

I was talking about two different ARTS 2 altimeters that I bought at the
same time.
The first one was flown 6-8 times & on one flight it reset to stand by mode.
I was able to download it right away & everything was fine & flew it again
without incident.
 The one I'm having trouble with; was flown for the first time Sunday &
preformed perfectly in flight (deployment wise).
When I went to download the data it just hangs when connected to the
computer.
I can go in & change both profiles, but can not download any data from the
flight. The download pop up appears & just hangs there.
Would this happen if there is no data?

Chris,

 

Check the battery construction. 9v batteries are actually made up of 6 small
cells. Some manufacturers weld the cell contacts together, some only use
compression terminals. Take one apart to see how it is made.

 

The captured data file is different, but I bet the raw data points after
that step are the same as a previous flight. Remember that you need to look
at the raw data, there will be a different calibration for each flight
applied to the data.

 

As for recording rates, it really depends on how long you expect the flight
to be. DataAnalyzer displays the recoding length as you select different
recording rates.

The main may have been a bit energetic and forgot to state that the nose
cone pulled out the main at apogee. That would cause enough trama plus I
tried a new series of battery which may have been another point of failure. 

 

The captured log is different from the previous flights, I collect them. 

 

Another question over sample rates, what in your expertise whould you set
for flight durations over 80 seconds.

Oh I agree, My van recently has more miles up than forward and reverse in
the past month. 

I can not complain, I got this one used and it was a champ until that fall
under drouge only and not to meantion this was the one I changed the
terminals on. 

 

It has not been a priority since I have another Arts I and (2) Arts II. 

 

Once things settle down, I'll probally mail it for evaluation sooner or
later or not since I need a reliable altimeter for my WOKET and apogee is
all thats needed.

Sometimes a hard landing will break solder joints and make an altimeter "a
little funny". The hard part with this type of damage is that it doesn't
always present itself on the test bench. Sort of like that funny rattle a
car keeps making, but then stops when you bring it in to a mechanic.

My ARTS I acted funny at the MARS launch in August. 

New battery, verified continuity on both FORE and AFT e-matches and
everything sounded fine one out on the PAD armed.

 

Once retrieved, the ARTS I was beeping as if it was ready for flight but as
you stated the data was there and downloaded with ease. 

 

The flight went to 5150' on a K695skidmark loaded in the LOC Magnum, it
seems that I almost broke mach.

 

This ALT did take a hard landing 2 flights ago and it has been a little
funny. Just have not found time to mail it in for diagnostics/repair.

I've taken apart a Duracell 9V alkaline before. The cells are welded 
together with thin strips of metal. Been using them exclusively for more 
extreme flights and soldering power connections directly to the 
terminals. No failures so far.

I don't know if I mentioned that, this was the first fight of this ARTS 2 unit. 
The flight was perfect other than no data was recorded....

  Sometimes a hard landing will break solder joints and make an altimeter "a little funny". The hard part with this type of damage is that it doesn't always present itself on the test bench. Sort of like that funny rattle a car keeps making, but then stops when you bring it in to a mechanic.

        Jeff, 

        My ARTS I acted funny at the MARS launch in August. 

        New battery, verified continuity on both FORE and AFT e-matches and everything sounded fine one out on the PAD armed.

         

        Once retrieved, the ARTS I was beeping as if it was ready for flight but as you stated the data was there and downloaded with ease. 

         

        The flight went to 5150' on a K695skidmark loaded in the LOC Magnum, it seems that I almost broke mach.

         

        This ALT did take a hard landing 2 flights ago and it has been a little funny. Just have not found time to mail it in for diagnostics/repair.
