[ARTS] ARTS 2

Mike,

The radio module sucks a LOT of power when trnsmitting. I typically fly it wth a rechargable (rechargeable is GOOD!!) 9.6v RC car battery back. The one I use is from Radio Shack. See:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103206

They also carry a NiMH version of the same battery pack. These will run the telem system for a few hours.

Glad to help!

Thanks,
Erik

        Erik,

I changed the batteries on the board last night. I put it into gps mode and connected with hyper terminal and got data for a short period of time. When I tried to connect the second time and I could not.

I checked the voltage output on the receiver and it was at 5.3V. I then checked the voltage output from the regulator and it was at 4.2. Looks like I found the problem. After replacing the batteries on the receiver everything worked fine.

I now can get everything to work with both Vista and XP.

What do you suggest for powering the transmitter board. Two 9V wired in parallel or is there something better?

Appreciate you talking the time to help us trouble shoot.

        Thanks,

        Mike Whorley

          Mike,

One more thing: Check the voltage input at the battery terminals on the transmitter board while it is powered up and transmitting. It needs to be above 8.6v.

          Thanks,

          Erik

Yes, if the switch is set for GPS, you should see NMEA sentences if you use HyperTermial.

Good test, please let me know how it goes.

          Thanks,

          Erik

I didn't mention it but I made sure it was set to ARTS.

If connected to hyperterminal and set to gps should I be able to see the gps (NMEA?)sentences?

                  Mike,

First thing, make sure the switch on the transmitter is in the ARTS position. If it is in the GPS position, then the data from the GPS is sent directly to the radio with no ARTS interaction at all, just as you describe. Also, with the switch in the GPS position you will not get any data in RadioRx (RadioRx is only for ARTS mode), and you will need a “regular” GPS program like VisualGPS.

                Thanks,

                Erik

                      Jeff,

I am having problems connecting the ARTS with the transmitter/receiver. I have tried using both Vista and XP.

Using Vista I change the config file to the correct com port. This seems to work with the altimeter because I can do diagnostics except the radio check and can configure the altimeter.

There is no data in the combo box for com port when I do it this way.

On the receiver end there is no real way of telling if the com port is working or not. If I change the config file for the correct com port I do not get the error message and at the bottom it displays the com port and baud rate instead of comport error.

With XP I get info in the combo boxes and no comport errors. The altimeter works fine.

                      Things I have checked:

Baud Rate - 9600 bps as per unit Also checked baud rate with device manager.

Channel settings - checked all. Made sure both the units where on the same channel.

Device drivers - All device drivers are installed

I can get the TX led to brighten and dim per transmitting. Likewise I get the receiver led to blink per receiving. I can not get the radio check in the diagnostics to work nor can I get anything with the Radio RX program.

Is there something I am missing?

                      Thanks,

                      Mike Whorley
