Also, it helps to always plug your USB dongle into the same port. I
find that I get a different COM port on my dongle depending on what port
I plug into. Thus, once it is working, I need to plug into the same
port or else reconfig the software. Using the same port is easier.

Com ports always seem to be a fight, and dongles obfuscate things more.
I was just playing with my new/used eTrex Vista (for use with the
BeeLine APRS GPS) and while figuring to fight the com port wars, saw
while it came up with COM1 by default, it had auto-detect.
Simple enough, it iterates through all the com ports, and for those
attached, has a short chat to ensure it's what it's looking for (in this
case Garmin GPS) and then leaves those settings loaded.
That would be handy to help with the ARTS com port wrangling.

Hi Howard,
Had this problem before as well if you're using USB->Serial
adapter, then you need
To go into System->Device Manager->USB Serial and double click
to get properties
And then select COM port assignment. Select one which isn't
being used and you're
All set.
Hope this helps.

Sorry if this is a duplicate.
I have an ARTS2 w/GPS. I haven't flown either yet. When I try
and get the GPS to work, my machine says it can't find COM1 or COM4.
I have tried both serial and USB. I am also getting a floating
point error with the GPS software too. I am running Windows XP Home
Edition on a Dell XPS 2007 machine.
Thank you for any help or tips....Howard
